And he’s only just begun.įassbender and Kurzel – who are currently hard at work, filming Assassin’s Creed together – have made a Macbeth film, and it looks absolutely incredible. Not only does Kurzel lay any hesitations or concerns to rest regarding his position at the helm of this immense, videogame movie, but he also seems to have tact, and a respectable handling of this particular, Shakespearean tragedy. Hunger, Eden Lake, Fishtank, Inglourious Basterds, Jane Eyre, A Dangerous Method, Shame, Prometheus, 12 Years a Slave, The Counselor, Frank, and Steve Jobs. He’s moved from small part, independent films to leading man positions with the greatest directors of this time. His oeuvre, as it were, is already established in my mind as one of the greatest filmographies of his generation. Fassbender has done something few actors do. And when his starpower reminds me he’s an actor, or threatens to take me out of it – his talent tells me to focus on the fully realized human being on screen.

I can lose myself in his roles, because he’s a marvelous actor to watch. The last time this happened, it was Christian Bale, from around 2000 to 2008. It’s a perfect balance of these two elements that comes around once a decade, more or less. Michael Fassbender is the best, simply put. In the field of acting, he’s created an impressive situation for himself. He has moved from the pews to the altar, and sits with the other elder, equally elite actors of his stature now. He’s quickly become my favourite contemporary actor, as he’s technically a superstar, but the greatest character actor of his generation, as well.

Justin Kurzel‘s Macbeth ( 2015) movie poster has been released in anticipation of the film’s release.
